Shade Matching Tips for Anterior Zirconia Cases

Anterior zirconia fails in the chair more often from incomplete shade records than from milling error. Here is what to send so the lab can match value, chroma, and translucency.

Why anterior zirconia is unforgiving

A posterior monolithic crown can hide small shade misses. A central incisor cannot. Patients see value first, then chroma, then the way light passes through the incisal third.

If the lab only receives “A2” on the Rx, the technician is guessing about stump color, enamel halo, and whether the neighbor is a high-translucency natural tooth or an older PFM.

Records that actually change the result

Photograph the tab in the same plane as the teeth, with the shade letter visible. Add a second photo without the tab. Cross-polarized images reduce glare so we can read chroma instead of flash hotspots.

Write the stump shade after prep. A dark stump under high-translucency zirconia will gray-out the crown no matter how well we stain the surface. That single note often decides monolithic versus layered.

What Phoenix Dental Tech does with those records

We match value before we chase characterization. Characterization that looks busy on a too-dark core still looks wrong at two feet.

For Ocean Township and statewide NJ cases, we can review photos the same day if something is missing — faster than seating a remake next month.

FAQ

Is a Vita shade tab enough for an anterior zirconia case?

A tab is a start, not a complete record. Include stump shade, polarized and unpolarized photos, and a note about the adjacent teeth you want to blend with.

When should I request a custom shade consult?

High-smile-line centrals, single-unit replacements next to natural enamel, and patients with high chroma or unusual translucency benefit from a consult or extra photos.
