Custom Abutments vs Stock Abutments: A Lab Perspective

Stock abutments are faster. Custom abutments are kinder to tissue and cement cleanup when the implant is not perfectly placed. Here is how we decide.

What a stock abutment cannot do

A stock abutment follows the implant, not the ridge. If the fixture is slightly buccal or the tissue is thin, the cement line sits deep and the contour looks like a fence post.

Custom contours move the margin to a cleansable height and support the papilla instead of crushing it.

When stock is still the right call

Ideal placement, thick tissue, and a posterior molar with low aesthetic demand can do well on a quality stock abutment — especially if the patient needs a faster, lower-cost path.

We would rather tell you that than upsell a custom part you do not need.

What to send so design is not a guess

Scan body (fully seated), opposing, bite, implant system, and a photo of the tissue. Soft-tissue scans help more than a stone model of a collapsed socket.

Phoenix Dental Tech designs to the tissue you captured that day. If the site is still healing, say so — we will plan a provisional contour first.

FAQ

Do you need the implant brand and platform on every case?

Yes. Platform, diameter, and connection type are required. A wrong library produces an abutment that seats on the model and fails in the mouth.

Can a custom abutment still be screw-retained at the crown?

Yes. We routinely design custom titanium or zirconia abutments with a screw-retained crown when access and angulation allow.
